Some portions
of Wisconsin's Wolf River have bank erosion problems.
The usual solution to these problems is to rip-rap
significant portions of the streambank. NES fluvial
geomorphologists rely on alternative methods such as
bioengineering and natural materials restoration. The
end result is long term stability combined with a
natural, healthy riparian ecosystem. Through a grant
obtained by NES for the Wolf River Preservation
Association, we restored approximately 1000 feet of
river bank on two projects. Techniques involved rootwad
and large woody debris installation, willow post
planting and native plantings (above). The lower photo
shows one of the projects after only 3 months of growth.
