Thunder River Fisheries Study

NES fisheries biologists worked with private landowners to evaluate brook and brown trout populations in the Thunder River. An evaluation of habitat was done using the Visual Assessment Protocol (National Resource Conservation Service), and a stream electrofishing survey was completed in midsummer. A detailed analysis of fish population distribution, growth and age was included in the final report, along with recommendations for management of a healthy ecosystem.

Based on these recommendations, NES has rehabilitated some damaged reaches, providing complex habitat for spawining and for juvenile and adult fish. NES scientists believe in ecosytem based management. By creating healthy ecosystems with complex habitat features, we can aid populations of all species, including fish.
